FAQs
What is the best type of personal training for me?
The best type of personal training depends on how much coaching, privacy, flexibility, and social interaction you want. At Forward Thinking Fitness, we don’t shove everyone into the same workout and call it “personalized.” That’s adorable, but it’s not personal training. We offer Semi Private, Small Group, Solo, and Private Personal Training so we can prescribe the format that actually makes sense for your goals, health history, personality, schedule, and budget.
What makes Forward Thinking Fitness personal training different from a regular gym?
At a regular gym, you’re usually paying for access to equipment. At Forward Thinking Fitness, you’re paying professionals to figure out how to use exercise to improve YOUR body. Our personal training programs are built around your goals, abilities, health history, and progress instead of handing everyone the “Workout of the Day” and hoping for the best. We combine professional coaching, functional strength training, progress tracking, and access to other health services to create a much more comprehensive approach.
Where can I find personalized personal training in the Lehigh Valley?
Forward Thinking Fitness provides personalized personal training at our facility in Allentown, PA, serving clients throughout the Lehigh Valley including Allentown, Bethlehem, Orefield, Fogelsville, Trexlertown, Macungie, Emmaus, Whitehall, and surrounding communities. We’re built for people who want professional coaching rather than another gym membership they swear they’re going to start using next Monday.
Can personal training help me lose body fat and gain muscle at the same time?
Absolutely. Losing body fat while maintaining or gaining lean muscle is called body recomposition, and strength training is one of the most important pieces of that puzzle. We’ll combine progressive strength training with appropriate conditioning and can integrate Nutrition Therapy when necessary. Translation? We’re interested in improving your health on the inside – not just celebrating because gravity gave you a smaller number on the bathroom scale.
Is personal training appropriate for adults over 40 or 50?
Not only is personal training appropriate for adults over 40 or 50, strength training becomes increasingly important as we age in our 30s. Maintaining muscle, strength, balance, mobility, and physical capacity can help you continue doing the things you actually enjoy doing. We customize your training around your current abilities instead of pretending your joints, recovery, training history, and 22-year-old Instagram influencer’s joints are all the same.
How many days per week should I work with a personal trainer?
For many adults, training two to three times per week provides an excellent foundation, but the right frequency depends on your goals, experience, recovery, health history, and what you’re doing outside the gym. We’ll recommend a training frequency during your Discovery process instead of randomly selling you as many sessions as possible. More isn’t automatically better. Better is better.
Do you offer strength training for beginners?
Yes. Many Forward Thinking Fitness clients begin with little exercise experience—or return after years or even decades away from structured exercise. Your program starts where YOU are. We focus on establishing proper movement, technique, confidence, and tolerance before increasing complexity and intensity. Nobody gets bonus points for making a beginner crawl out of the gym.
Can I exercise at Forward Thinking Fitness if I have injuries or physical limitations?
Potentially, yes, depending on your individual circumstances and medical needs. We review your health history before prescribing your training plan and modify exercises around your abilities when appropriate. If something falls outside our scope or we believe you should see another healthcare professional first, we’ll tell you. Getting you healthier is more important than getting you onto our schedule.
Does Forward Thinking Fitness combine personal training with nutrition?
Yes. One of FTF’s biggest advantages is our ability to combine Personal Training with Nutrition Therapy when both are appropriate for your goals. Your trainer can attack the movement side while a Registered Dietitian addresses nutrition, giving you professionals working on different pieces of the same health puzzle instead of receiving random advice from five different corners of the internet.
How do I choose a personal trainer in Allentown or the Lehigh Valley?
Look beyond certifications and six-pack selfies. A great personal training facility should evaluate your health history, understand your goals, personalize your programming, track your progress, communicate clearly, and know when something falls outside its scope of practice. Most importantly, ask what happens AFTER you sign up. If the answer is essentially “show up and we’ll figure something out,” keep shopping.
